Lawmakers Protest Obasanjo's Call for Cancellation of Constituency Projects
Federal lawmaker representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi Owode/Odeda Federal Constituency, Hon. Micky Kazeem and Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, at the weekend, condemned former President Olusegun Obasanjo's call for cancellation of constituency projects.
Obasanjo had at the end of a two-day National Council of Finance and Economic Development conference held in Abeokuta, called for cancellation of constituency projects embarked upon by lawmakers, saying executive should be allowed to embark on government projects.
The lawmakers, who disagreed with Obama, argued that constituency projects provide the avenue for political leaders to appreciate their people.
Speaking during an empowerment programme organised by Micky Kazzim to the people of his constituency in Abeokuta, Adekunbi said "no one can compete anything with the former president, the argument is like an authority."
He noted however that "if we look at the policy behind establishment of constituency project and in any case part of the representative efforts to look for a way to give back to our people was how we came about constituency project."
On his part, Kazeem said political office holders should not wait for constituency projects before they give back to their people, urging his colleagues to emulate him , using their money to fund empowerment programmes.
He however said " the issue of constituency projects would help us to get the support of our people during election period.
"It's the time we have to give back to our community .We remember when we are canvassing for votes , we went round villages, knocking on people's doors. People are not mad, not fools anymore, it is about time we allow them to enjoy their votes.
"We all know the situation of the economy, its time to give back to the people because if we consider the economic situation, we won't do anything till kingdom come," he surmised.
