Governor Mruttu Blames IEBC On Low Voter Registration Turnout

April 16, 2017, 9:25 am

Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu has accused the electoral body IEBC of misleading the public on voter registration as the exercise nears its end.

Speaking in an interview on Radio Maisha on Tuesday he said many Kenyans were expecting continuity of the registration at constituency offices even after the closure of the mass registration on Tuesday 14 February.

He said that IEBC had only informed the public of plans to end the mass enlisting of voters and many others would opt to register at IEBC offices later and would also allow those getting to eligibility age afterward to participate in the August elections.

"I am disappointed with the commission's move to terminate registration in entirety including the continuous one at their offices yet the public was only aware of the month-long mass voter registration's closure," said Mruttu.

He said the commission will have itself to blame on not attaining its target as it failed to have an effective civic education.

Mruttu said members of the public tend to disregard civic education done by the Government and the commission's officials in most parts of the country that are aligned to the opposition.

He revealed that registration turnout in Taita Taveta has been poor attributing it to the weather adversity subjected to the residents.
He has called on proper planning among those involved in the provision of humanitarian aid as drought bites on creating a food and water shortage crisis in the county.

He said the county commissioner alongside the County Government officials are set to meet non-governmental organisations on Thursday to have a proper mitigation work plan welcoming the move by the Red Cross to issue aid in cash to affected families as food stuffs initially could land in the wrong hands.
